Albert and Sheila Lain and their family.
Finewood is a family run business based in rural Suffolk delighting in producing fine pieces of furniture to last many lifetimes.
Headed by Albert Lain, Finewood's origins go back over 40 years when Albert, following completion of cabinet making training, began making wooden play equipment for his new family. This grew into a thriving concern producing robust climbing frames, see-saws, Wendy houses and the like for people looking for something a bit special in a market that was at the time very limited. Even though we have not been making this type of thing for many years now there is a sense of pride and pleasure when the grand-children rave about the climbing frame they played on at pre-school which just happens to be one that Grandad made all those years ago.
Finewood itself was founded more than 15 years ago specialising in bespoke pieces of woodwork, be it furniture, cabinet making, restoration or specialised twistwork or copyturning.
Despite the diversity in the pieces that are now produced in our rural workshop, our underlying ethos of "treading carefully on this Earth" runs through all our work. From origins and selection of the timber used to the respect for designs handed down from generation to generation we are always conscious of what we are preserving for future generations. Most of our timber comes from replenished English sources with every scrap and offcut being put to good use. Beautiful pieces of offcut burr elm or oak can be used for hand turning lightpulls, keyfobs and other small pieces. Even dust and shavings are used as a heat source for more than one local workshop and home.
Thus we hope to ensure that Finewood's legacy is not just family heirlooms but a sincere contribution (albeit small) to preserve the delights of this Earth for our family and yours.
